Check ID: storage_ensure_azure_services_are_trusted_to_access_is_enabled
Provider: Azure
Service: storage
Severity: MEDIUM
Categories: trust-boundaries
Resource type: microsoft.storage/storageaccounts

What this check verifies

Azure Storage account network rules include the AzureServices bypass so trusted Microsoft services can reach the account even when firewalls restrict public access

Risk

Without this exception, platform services relying on the account (backup, monitoring, replication) can be blocked, causing failed backups, missing logs, and stalled workflows-affecting availability and integrity. Teams may over-broaden network access to compensate, increasing confidentiality risk.

Recommendation

Enable the trusted services exception (AzureServices) for storage accounts used by platform services.
  • Enforce least privilege with RBAC and managed identities
  • Keep networks restricted; prefer private endpoints
  • Monitor access and review exceptions regularly

Remediation

az storage account update —name <StorageAccountName> —resource-group <resourceGroupName> —bypass AzureServices

To re-evaluate after a fix, hit Run now on the account’s schedule under Cloud Security → Schedules — the next scan re-checks this control and marks the finding fixed or keeps it persistent.
